Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Asterisks in cross-references

Where cross-references contain asterisks * that are not part of the target text, wrap the asterisk in a span element with attribute display="print". Do not capture asterisks or the noMarker role for online-only cross-references.

You must capture asterisks within the cross-reference in the correct position (usually before the first word of the headword of the entry being linked to).

<span display="print">*</span>capital
city</xref>

If an xref cross-reference with attribute type="1" does not use an asterisk for marking the link then set attribute role="noMarker". Only use the noMarker value when all cross-references within the content do not use markers. If only some cross-references use asterisks then there is an error in the content. Contact the OUP for assistance.

In many cases asterisks are not used because the cross-reference use small-capitals formatting to emphasise the link. When present, capture small-capitals in the sc element.
