Main name (surname) in name groups

The main name is the family name or surname of a person, as opposed to any given names. Capture the main name in the mainName attribute.

nameGrp/@mainName

This is the name under which a person appears in an alphabetical list, e.g. an index (in inverted form for western names, e.g. Smith, Joan).

Some people are known only by a single name (kings, queens, popes, etc.). For such people, the main name is what would in other people be a forename.

For law reports, surnames are underlined in the source document. This formatting is used to help identify the value of the mainName attribute, but should not otherwise be preserved in the XML. Fields which may contain underlined surnames include:

  • Party 1/Party 2/Party 3
  • Arbitrators/Judges
  • Counsel
  • Commentator
  • Reporter

The mainName attribute is a mandatory attribute on the nameGrp element.
