Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

COTUS Monographs chapters (articles, sections, chapters, parts, etc.)

Use the chapter element to capture all the headings that appear in bold in the table of contents (TOC).

Determine which content to capture as chapter elements based on the structure and presentation of the text and not necessarily based on the enumerators.

In some instances, this means:

  • That article headings receive the chapter element (e.g. Alabama).
  • That part headings receive the chapter element (e.g. New Hampshire)
  • That chapter headings receive the chapter element (e.g. Vermont).
  • That other mixed headings receive a chapter element depending on the structure of the monograph.

For example, Maryland contains article headings that are captured as both div[1-7,N] divisions and chapter elements.

In some cases a bold heading in the TOC may not exactly match the true name of the chapter title presented later in the book. (For instance, 'Preamble' and 'Article 1' may be listed separately in the TOC but then presented as the same chapter titled 'Preamble and Article 1'. In these instances only one of the headings may be bold in the TOC but the chapter element must still be used (see Example).
