Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Content alignment

Where alignment communicates information or forms an important part of the work, some poems, songs, and quotes need a more complex XML structure to capture alignment.

PMI Page make-up instruction.

Content alignment set in the manuscript (through use of alignment options in Word) should be maintained in the XML. A page-makeup instruction (or <PMI>) will indicate in a frontlist manuscript if complex alignment is important and must be replicated.

If backlist, important alignment should be indicated in a manifest.

If content cannot be captured using the typical capture methods then alignment can be set by using alignment attribute on displayText, lineGroup and line.

alignment on displayText and lineGroup will align the block of content.

alignment on p and line will align the line within the block of content.

Values for alignment can be: left, right, centre, or justified.

Poetry with unusual alignment

media/alignment.png

  • Poem
  • displayText - no need to set alignment, as all children need alignment (default sets this to left).
  • lineGroup – no need to set alignment, as all children need alignment. All lines within this lineGroup are alignment=”centre”.
  • lineGroup – needs alignment=”centre”, as children require different alignments within the lineGroup. Last line in this lineGroup is alignment="centre".
  • lineGroup – needs alignment=”centre”, as children are left aligned within a centred block of text. Use of no-break space is needed to indent the second and fourth lines.
  • XML
