Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Footnotes

Capture footnotes in a noteGroup element with each note having attribute type="footnote".

FN Used for a footnote in a manuscript
BFN Used for a footnote to text in a box
//noteGroup/note[@type="footnote"]

Capture note @type="footnote" in noteGroup element within the same section of content as the cross reference to the note within the text.

For the location of the noteGroup elements, consider a section of content to be any of:

  • Part
  • PartFrontMatter
  • section
  • sectionFrontMatter
  • chapter
  • chapterFrontMatter
  • work
  • commentary
  • e
  • appendixGroup
  • appendix
  • miscMatterGroup
  • miscMatter
  • bibliographyGroup
  • bibliography
  • indexGroup
  • index
  • div[1-7,N]
Capture noteGroup elements at the lowest-level section in the XML structure which contains the cross reference to the note within the text.

Examples:

  • For references to footnote elements that occur within div[1-7,N] capture the containing element noteGroup near the end of the div[1-7,N] where the references to the footnotes are.
  • For A-Z content capture the noteGroup within the e entry that refers to the footnote.
  • For reference to a footnote element that occurs within element titleGroup of a chapter place the containing element noteGroup near the end of that chapter.
  • If references to a single footnote element occur within multiple div[1-7,N] elements, or within div[1-7,N] elements at multiple levels of the hierarchy, place the containing element noteGroup near the end of the level which is the lowest common ancestor of every division containing the references.

References to footnotes are indicated in the text by superscript numbers, letters, or symbols. Capture the identifying number, letter, or symbol inside an enumerator element in the note, and inside an xref element in the main text.

On the same page as the footnote, create an xref within an xrefGrp and give the group an attribute role="footnote". If there is more than one reference to the same footnote, only flag the first with role="footnote".

Only the main reference to a footnote should have the role="footnote" attribute on the xrefGrp.
If noteGroup is a child of document, an id is required.

Example

<p>
<enumerator>1.1.02</enumerator>In previous Companies Acts the definition appeared towards
the end of the statute,<xrefGrp role="footnote">
<xref ref="law-9780199211746-note-1">
1
</xref>
</xrefGrp> but it does seem more helpful to commence the
legislation in this way.</p>
<!-- Content skipped for brevity -->
<noteGroup>
<note id="law-9780199211746-chapter-1-note-1" type="footnote"><p>
<enumerator>
1
</enumerator> Eg, s 735 in the 1985 Act.</p>
</note>
</noteGroup>
