Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Cross-references in law report headnotes

The headnote of a case report can contain internal cross-references to specific paragraphs within the judgment for the case report.

//xrefGrp/xref

In the headnote source documents, cross-references are identified by bold text. An example of text for xref linking would be (paras 36-9) . Capture paragraph references, for instance paragraph n or paragraph n-n (where n is the paragraph number) in xref elements. Where text refers to more than one paragraph (e.g. paragraph n-n), make the link to the first mentioned paragraph.

Capture xref elements inside xrefGrp groups. Capture brackets that surround cross-references, inside the xrefGrp but outside the xref. Set the value of the ref attribute of the xref element to the value of the paragraph id attribute of the target in the decision.

Headnotes can also contain abbreviations, replace them appropriately as follows:

Additional rules:

  • If the judgment text does not already include paragraph numbering, then number all paragraphs in the judgment during capture.
  • Do not add extra text, such as see ..., or ... in the judgment, to the cross-reference text.
  • Do not capture spaces between paragraph and section numbers, for example, capture reference as paragraph 1(2), not paragraph 1 (2)
  • Whenever it is available, use the English (i.e. translated) version of a paragraph as the target.
  • Where the target of the link is to a numbered paragraph in a non-roman text judgment that is to be held as a PDF document), capture the reference text (e.g. “reference n” or “paragraph n”) from the headnote but do not capture the reference as a link.
  • Different rules apply for links to unnumbered paragraphs and unnumbered paragraphs in a non-roman text judgments.
  • Case reports can use the same paragraph numbers for paragraphs in the main decision and in the opinion. So, for example '(para 20)' could refer to the paragraph numbered 20 in the main decision, or paragraph 20 of a separate opinion. Check the context of the reference to decide the correct target paragraph. In these situations, OUP often include explanatory text. to help identify the correct paragraph.
In any case where the target of a link has not been clearly identified in the source documents, ask your contact at OUP.
