Multilateral Treaty

Multilateral treaties are treaties made between more than two states.

With the exception of bilateral investment treaties, most treaties in OUP law documents are multilateral treaties.

If an international instrument can be identified as a multilateral treaty, it is preferable to choose the Multilateral Treaty subclass over the Treaty subclass type.

Note that agreements, conventions, etc., may also be multilateral treaties, but is it preferable to choose one of the sub-types of:

  • Agreement
  • Convention
  • Charter
  • Covenant
  • Protocol
