OxMed: Breaking up A-Z content into chapters

The content of some Oxford Medical titles consists of alphabetized A to Z entries, for example, an A-Z list of drugs. Other books may include a part or chapter that has content listed in A-Z form.

For books that are comprised solely of A-Z content, follow the instructions below to split the A-Z list into chapters.

For books that contain an A-Z part or chapter and some parts or chapters before or after the list, make a new Part for the A-Z list and then follow the instructions below to split the A-Z list into chapters.

Books such as the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine and the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialities (Appendix B) use A-Z chunking on A-Z chapters. Where appropriate, use the specific A-Z chunking instructions for the OxMed title instead of these instructions.

  1. Create a chapter element for each letter of the alphabet for which there is at least one item. That is, do not create a chapter for J if no items begin with J.
Do not add these new chapters to the table of contents in the front matter.
  2. Give the new chapter elements attribute role="alphabetized" and create a titleGroup/title for each chapter, containing the letter of the alphabet.
  3. Capture each headword item that begins with the letter of the chapter in a div1 division. In general a headword begins with the letter of the chapter and is differentiated from the definition by the typography.
  4. Use subsequent div[1-7,N] division headings for subsequent structures or headings below the headword.
