Reasons for using a div[1-7,N] element

When to use a structural div[1-7,N] element.

Reason

Notes

Headed section

The element contains a titleGroup as first child, and all content covered under that heading

Numbered paragraph

The element contains a p as first child, which itself contains an enumerator child.

For example, in a Law monograph, Chapter 4 may consist of paragraphs numbered 4.01, 4.02, 4.03, ..., independently of any section headings and subheadings within the chapter.

This style is used when there is no heading accompanying the paragraph number.

Text preceding first headed section

A section may consist of some preamble, followed by one or more headed subsections.

Wrap preamble paragraphs in a div[1-7,N] element with attribute role="prelim". Do not capture p elements as siblings of div[1-7,N] elements.

This kind of div[1-7,N] contains no titleGroup and no enumerated p

Dummy level

The element contains only div[1-7,N] elements of the next lower level.

This style is used where the content skips a heading level, e.g. an A-head section (div1) containing only C-headed subsections (div3) uses a 'dummy' div2 level.
