Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

ONIX metadata

ONIX metadata is required for whole-book OxChapML and OxEncyclML documents. It is not required for First Proofs XML, or for documents written to other DTDs, and is not required in Chunk First XML (e.g. documents that are part of the chapter/article first workflow).

Add ONIX metadata by running the Add ONIX script that OUP provides. This script connects to OUPs metadata database using FTP, downloads the metadata for the title and then insert it into the XML. The script relies on the id attribute of the root book element being in the correct format in order to determine the ISBN of the book.

To run Add ONIX:

  • Go to https://probity.oup.com/qc-qa/index.php
  • Select the Data Processing tab.
  • In the Process to run drop-down, select Add ONIX.
  • Load an XML file, or zipped batch of XML files, using Select File.
  • Click Go.

The content model for the ONIXMessage element is defined in the ONIX DTD (version 2.0), a module of OxChapML.
