Do not capture references within a document to sections of itself as bibliography items. Capture them as cross references using the xref element.

Do not capture references to 'chapter' or 'part' that are within bibliographic references as an internal cross-reference when they make up information within a bibItem.

If the reference is pointing to a different volume then capture it using the extRef element.

Where a cross-reference refers to an individual’s surname and forename or initial, capture the name using nameGrp with all relevant attributes within the xref.

Any styling that occurs within cross-references (eg. small-capitals) should be tagged correctly.

When there are multiple cross-references in a group or sentence (such as multiple pages cited as a group for an index term separated by commas, or several cross references listed in a sentence separated by commas and the word and), capture multiple xref elements within xrefGrp.
