OBO: Oxford Bibliographies Online

Additional information for capturing Oxford Bibliographies Online (OBO) to the OxStructML DTD.

Capture each entry in OBO in a document element.

The publishing group for OBO is Reference-US. The metaDescribes element with attribute predicate = 'product-grouping' is not allowed on OBO.

Each entry in OBO is divided into nested sections, each containing a bibliographic list. Each item in a bibliographic list is accompanied by a piece of descriptive text. The lists themselves are summarized and cross-referenced in the main text.

  1. OBO productID and documentID for id and doi

    For OBO, values for element identifiers (the id attribute) and DOIs (the doi attribute) require a productID of obo and a documentID derived from the entry manuscript.

  2. OBO required element identifiers

    For OBO, specific elements require an id attribute.

  3. OBO capture DOI on document root only

    For OBO, only the document element requires a doi attribute.

  4. OBO document element and attributes

    The OBO document root element requires id, doi, entry, sortkey, title, docDesc and versionDate mandatory attributes.

  5. Capture OBO from MS Word manuscript styles

    For OBO, copy editors apply Microsoft Word styles to the manuscript to indicate the basic structure of the document. Use the styles to guide XML capture.

  6. OBO titles and headings

    Capture the title of the entry using titleGroup within document. Capture each section div[1-7,N] heading using titleGroup.

  7. OBO sections

    Capture sections using nested div[1-7,N] elements. Do not nest sections further than div3.

  8. OBO cross-references

    Capture cross-references to other sections within the same bibliography in xref elements. Capture cross-references to other bibliographies in different documents as extRef elements.

  9. OBO citations in text

    Items in each bibliographic list are cited in the text. They typically take an author, date format. Capture these citations using an xref element within an xrefGrp group.

  10. OBO web links

    For OBO editors show web links in the text with single asterisks * surrounding the linked text and the URL in brackets. Do not capture the asterisks and brackets in the XML.

  11. OBO bibliographic lists, groups and citations

    Capture each bibliographic list using a bibList list in a p element. Capture each item in the list using bibItemGroup. Capture the citation for the group in a bibItem element.

  12. Bibliographic non-legal citations in OBO

    For non-legal citations, OBO editors may add a callout to help identify the class of citation. This callout relates to the classes in the Core TCIs for bibliographic markup.

  13. OBO citation: Other - bibItem class="other"

    OBO non-legal citation called out in the manuscript by [class:other]

  14. OBO Complete Bibliographies

    Complete bibliographies appear in OBO content at the end of the article. Capture these as the last divN of the article, and capture the bibliographic entries as a mix of bibItem and bibItemGroup within bibList.
