Decision translation status

Capture the translation status from the filename in the type attribute.

judgment/@type

Use the type attribute to indicate whether the decision is in:

  • The original language (value "orig")
  • An official English translation (value "trans")
  • An unofficial English translation (value "unofficialTrans")
  • A partial (unofficial) English translation (value "partialTrans")
  • A partial official English translation (value "partialOfficialTrans").

To determine whether a translated judgment is official, unofficial, or partial, check the filename of the supplied document against the OUP file naming conventions.

Filename qualifiers that indicate translation status

Qualifier Description Value of type
OT Full, official English translation (of decisions whose originals are not in English) trans
T Full but unofficial English translation unofficialTrans
PT Partial (and unofficial) English translation partialTrans
POT Partial (and official) English translation partialOfficialTrans

Where the two versions are supplied together in a single document, the English version is always the official translation, that is type="trans". If a judgment document includes both original-language and English-translation versions side by side, capture the versions as two separate XML documents. Capture the foreign-language version in a judgment type="orig" element, and the English translation in a separate judgment type="trans" element.
