DOI updates

Editorial policy for some products is to update the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) value of a chapter or entry when you make a substantive change to the XML. (Some other products should not ever have their DOIs updated, however, so check with OUP if unsure.)

Confirm with Editorial whether a change requires an updated DOI. Some content (e.g. ORIL, ORO, MPEPIL, non-commentaries in IC and OCL) does not require DOIs to be updated at all. Where DOIs are updated, there may be particular criteria for when an update is considered to be substantive.

If you're creating the first update for the chapter/entry:

  • Append: '_update_001' to the DOI

If you're updating a chapter/entry that has already previously been updated:

  • Increment the update number at the end of the DOI.

    e.g. change '_update_001' to '_update_002'

Only change the DOI if the versionNum changes. Do not change it for each update that is made between publication of versions.
