COTUS Monographs

Each book of COTUS Monographs contains front matter, two or more parts, and back matter.

The headings for each segment of the book (e.g., sections, parts, articles, etc.) do not correspond to the XML element with the same name. For example, the title enumerators Section 2’ or Chapter 3 do not automatically indicate that you should use the element of the same name.

Use the presentation of the book, not what it literally says, to guide the structure of the XML as follows:

  • In some titles, Article headings are chapter elements, because they appear with a large heading and on a new page.
  • In other titles, Article headings are div[1-7,N] elements because they appear in the flow of text and do not start on a new page.
  • The two parts always use the part element; nothing else should use this element.

  1. COTUS Monograph front matter Introductions

    Capture introductions as part of the front matter even if they begin on page 1, rather than on a page with a roman-numeral page number. Even if they look like a chapter (see Texas, p. 1), treat them as a div[1-7,N] division in the front matter.

  2. COTUS Monographs Part One

    Part one of a COTUS Monograph contains content directly below the part title. To prevent a div[1-7,N] division becoming the direct child of part, add and suppress a dummy chapter element.

  3. COTUS Monographs Part Two

    After the front matter (text that falls between the part heading and the first section), capture each section of part two in a chapter element independent of the actual enumerator in the manuscript.

  4. COTUS Monographs Division levels

    To ensure that similar segments are on the same level across a chapter, create dummy div[1-7,N] elements.
