Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Medicine family: Biological p numbers

Not all p numbers are page numbers. Medical text books contain references to molecular and cell biology and these use a wide range of reference numbers some of which begin with a p. Capture these as plain text, not the pageNum element.

Chromosomal loci, genes, OMIM references, mutations, and proteins may all use a combination of letters and numbers to represent structure, location, or naming conventions. Often these number letter combinations include the letter "p". Do not confuse these items with page number references.

Capture these as they are written in plain text and do not use the pageNum element.

Unless you are certain that the p numbers (i.e. p38 or p53) preceded or followed by any of the following terms are referring to page numbers, capture them as plain text:

  • activated, activation
  • apoptosis
  • cancer
  • cell
  • delta
  • expression
  • gamma
  • inhibitor
  • kinase
  • map
  • mutation
  • pathway
  • phage
  • promotor
  • receptor
  • senescence
  • tumour
