Index

An index may occur at the front or end of a book, in a section in an e, or at the end of a part or chapter. There may be separate lists within the index. Always capture book indexes unless instructed otherwise.

Capture each index list as indexList within an indexGroup. Capture all adjacent index lists within the same indexGroup element.

If the indexGroup contains a single indexList, capture the title of the index within the indexList.

If the indexGroup contains multiple indexLists, each indexList must have its own title. If there is an over-arching title that applies to all of the indexLists (for example Indexes) then capture it as the indexGroup’s title.

Indicate the type of index list using the indexListType attribute.

  2. Index items

    Index items generally start with a headword followed by page or paragraph numbers. They can also contain sub items or cross-references to other index items.

  3. Index Locorum (Index of passages)

    The index locorum is common in classics titles and requires special attention because the headwords in these lists are the numbers of sections and passages in other texts and are easily mis-tagged.

  4. Index entries to figures, tables, boxes

    Index entries that are followed by an italic f, t, or b are index entries that refer to figures (f), tables (t), or boxes (b). Capture these as a cross reference to the milestone element representing the page containing the referenced figure, table, or box.

  5. Cross-references between index entries

    Capture cross-references between index entries using an xrefGrp group, with the target entry inside an xref element and introductory text (e.g. "see also" or "see under") outside the xref but inside the xrefGrp.

  6. Cross-reference from an index entry to a note

    Footnote numbers are usually preceded by a label such as "note", "n.", "nn." [= "notes"]. Take care to distinguish page numbers from footnote numbers.

  7. Cross-reference from an index entry to a paragraph number

    Where a cross-reference points to a paragraph number follow the general instruction for cross-referencing.

  8. Alphabetic groupings in indexes

    An index may be divided into groups of headwords beginning with the same letter.
