Critical apparatus notes
Also known as apparatus criticus or app crit, capture these notes as note type="appCrit"
//note[@type="appCrit"]
The line number in the app crit note should be linked (i.e. wrapped in an xref element) to the corresponding milestone unit="line" element in the text.
There may be a range of line numbers, e.g. "103-4". The link should be to the milestone element for the start of the range only.
In some types of work, e.g. collections of poems or letters, the same line number may appear more than once on a page. For example, a page may contain two different letters or poems, each with line numbering starting at 1. In these cases, where the app crit notes appear at the foot of the page, the notes for one block of lines will have an additional piece of text in front of the first line number, to identify which letter, poem, verse, etc. the notes belong to. This additional text may be in the form of a number, poem title, etc., and should be captured inside the xref element that also contains the line number.
Chosen reading and variant reading have been deprecated. Do not use this mark-up.
'Block-style' app crit notes
Occasionally an app crit note will consist of several lines, or a paragraph, of a variant reading.
In these cases the variant reading may itself have line numbers. It may also have app crit of its own.
Capture these ‘block-style’ app crit notes in a p element with a role=authentic, in which the line numbers should be captured as milestone elements as normal. If the variant reading has app crit notes, these should be linked to the milestone elements in the variant reading.
