Oxford University Press Text Capture Instructions

Alternate Headwords

Within the headwordGroup capture any alternative headwords of the main initial headword in individual altHeadwordGroup elements with attribute role="alternative".

//altHeadwordGroup[@role="alternative"]

Alternative headwords are usually variant spellings, languages, or extended versions of the initial headword. These types of words are sometimes separated by the word "or" and can also appear within brackets.

Example

  • Muhammad Ali or Cassius Clay
  • alexia (or word-blindness)
  • Verandah [veranda]

The structure within the altHeadwordGroup is similar to that of the headwordGroup but further altHeadwordGroup elements are not allowed.

Within a headwordGroup element, use plain text without style tags when capturing punctuation and words that fall between headwords (and that does not fall within the headwordInfo). Capture the punctuation and words outside the headword element.
