OSO, Oxford Law Pro and UPSO Chunk PDFs
All OSO titles require chunk PDFs for online purposes.
For all OSO titles, all Oxford Law Pro titles, and all UPSO titles in the Law module, follow the detailed instructions below to:
- identify segments of content requiring PDFs within the title (using the XML)
- isolate from the final print PDF file these separate “segment-specific” PDFs for those portions of content
- any trim marks should be removed
- OSO: save as searchable PDFs
- UPSO: save as image PDFs
- insert a citation and copyright attribution (previously referred to as a 'copyright slug')
- save and name appropriately
OSO titles identified as Trade/Impact/Catalogue on the Handover Form are exempt from the addition of the citation & copyright attribution. Trade/Impact/Catalogue titles should not include a citation & copyright attribution, either on the typeset PDF or Chunked PDF.
Segments of content requiring individual PDFs
In frontMatter, generate
- a single PDF that combines HalfTitle, TitlePage, SeriesInfo and TitleVerso; PDF filename is id of the halftitle page in the XML
- individual PDF files for each of the remaining miscMatter segments; PDF filename = id of the relevant miscMatter segment
In mainText, generate a single PDF for the following:
- each chapter; PDF filename is id of the chapter
- If partFrontMatter exists, a PDF of the part; PDF filename is id of the part
- If sectionFrontMatter exists, a PDF of the section; PDF filename is id of the section
In endMatter, generate a single PDF for each of the following:
- miscMatter; PDF filename is id of the miscMatter
- appendix; PDF filename is id of the appendix
- bibliography; PDF filename is id of the bibliography
- indexList; PDF filename is id of the indexList
Instructions for the creation and placement of DOIs and the citation & copyright attribution
The copyright attribution should be inserted in the typeset PDF at the foot of the first page of each chapter and the Introduction, if it is located in the Front Matter.
It is composed as follows:
For authored works
For individual chapters, the parent volume title and authorship are included in the attribution. Separate DOIs are assigned for each chapter (the 003 component indicates a chapter level DOI; the final 4 digit component indicates the chapter number e.g. 0002 is chapter 2).
The chapter level citation & copyright attribution comprises the following:
[Title]. [edition e.g. "Second Edition"]. [Author name/s], [Press name]. © [copyright owner] [copyright year]. DOI: [Chapter DOI]
Example (for Chapter 2):
Community Ecology. Second Edition. Gary G. Mittelbach & Brian J. McGill, Oxford University Press. © Gary G. Mittelbach & Brian J. McGill 2019. DOI: 10.1093/oso/9780198835851.003.0002
For edited works
For individual chapters, both the chapter title and authorship AND the parent volume title and editorship are included in the attribution. Separate DOIs are assigned for each chapter (the 003 component indicates a chapter level DOI; the final 4 digit component indicates the chapter number e.g. 0002 is chapter 2).
The chapter level citation & copyright attribution comprises the following:
[Chapter author name/s], [Chapter title] In: [Book title]. [edition number]. Edited by [Editor name/s], [Press name]. © [copyright owner] [copyright year]. DOI: [Chapter DOI]
Example (for Chapter 2):
Trenberth, K.E., and Hurrell, J.W., Climate change. In: Effects of Climate Change on Birds. Second Edition. Edited by Peter O. Dunn and Anders Pape Møller, Oxford University Press. © Oxford University Press 2019. DOI: 10.1093/oso/9780198824268.003.0002
The DOI must be placed in line with the attribution wherever possible. If this is not possible, the DOI must not be interrupted by a line break, and should be placed on a new line if necessary to avoid this (as per the example above).
