//nameGrp/@role

Capture personal names, including titles, in the nameGrp element. The attributes of the nameGrp element pick out the components of the name.

If in doubt as to which content to place in which attributes, ask your contact at OUP.

Where the name is an author, editor or played a similar role in preparing the document, capture their role in the role attribute as one of the following:

  • author
  • partAuthor
  • editor
  • editor in chief
  • translator
  • contributor
  • interviewer
  • interviewee

Additional roles are applied to both the OBO and ODNB products.

The "main name" part of a personal name (mainName attribute) may be underlined in the source document to assist capture. This formatting is used to help identify the value of the mainName attribute, but should not otherwise be preserved in the XML.

Example

<nameGrp role="author" foreNames="Fred E." mainName="Smith">Smith, Fred E.</nameGrp>
