Role | Definition |

Artist | The role of the creator of drawings that accompany but are not the primary content. If the drawings are the primary content, see Artist. |
Author | The role taken by a person who is the writer of content. Preparation, creation and/or structure of content of the published work, specifically writing the initial draft. |
Cartographer | The role of one who created or otherwise contributed maps supplementary to the content. |
Colourist | The role of one who contributed colouring to artwork in the process of drawing/inking/colouring/finishing when this process is done by multiple separate contributors. |
Comic Script Author | The role of one who writes dialogue, captions, and other text in comic book content following an outline by the primary writer. |
Composer | The role of the primary author of music. |
Concept Creator | The role of one who provided the idea or core concept for the work if they are separate from the primary author. |
Continuing Author | The role of one who has in this work provided a direct continuation of an original work by another author. |
Contributor | The role of one who has contributed additional text which accompanies but does not make up the main text of the work. Note that the role of the person who has written the main text of a chapter should be 'Author' rather than 'Contributor'. |
Cover Artist | The role of the artist who created the cover art image for the work. |
Creator | The role of one who originally created the work and has significant input on the format/direction of an ongoing series, usually in televsion/film. |
Designer | The role of one who authored the original design for the content. |
Expert Commentator | The role of a person who has provided expert commentary as part of a piece of content. |
Illustrator | The role of the artist who created illustratons accompanying the content, or who created/pencilled the original linework of a graphic novel or comic. |
Inker | The role of one who finalises the linework of the original illustrator. |
Interviewee | The role of the one being interviewed by an interviewer. |
Interviewer | The role of the one conducting the interview of an interviewee. |
Letterer | The role of one who creates text balloons and other text elements for text created by a separate contributor. |
Libretto Author | The role of the author of text accompanying a musical work such as an opera. |
Lyricist | The role of the primary author of the lyrics of a song. |
Lyrics Author | The role of a secondary author of the lyrics of a song. |
Original Author | The role of the author of the first edition of a work who is not an author of this current edition. |
Other Primary Creator | The role of the primary creator of the content when their relationship to the work is not covered by any other available roles. |

Assistant | The generic role of one who provideded assistance to another contributor in their editing role, but not to such a degree that the assistant can be given that other role. |
Associate Editor | The role of an editor who is delegated work from the editor-in-chief or more senior editor. |
Consultant Editor | The role of an editor brought on in an advisory capacity to contribute their knowledge to the editorial process around the publication fo the work. |
Dramatising Editor | The role of one reponsible for the adaptation of content into a dramatic form. |
Editor | The role of a person or organization who commissions or prepares written or recorded material for publication. |
Editor-in-Chief | The role of the principal editor of a publication, responsible for managing editorial policies and the production of content. |
Editorial Board Member | The role of one who is a member of the editorial board which commissioned or prepared the content for publication. |
Editorial Co-ordinator | The role of one who coordinates editorial work by multiple editors working on the content. |
Founding Editor | The role of the editor who founded a serial publication or other continuing edited collection of content. |
General Editor | The role of the editor who supervises other editors working on content in a collection. |
General Rapporteur | The role of an expert editor who takes responsibility for the legal content of a collaborative law volume. |
Guest Editor | The role of an editor who acquires content and leads the review process for a special issue of a journal. |

Glossary of metadata fields
- Abstract
- A concise description, typically 100-250 words, of a book, chapter or journal article including the main arguments and conclusions of the content, and highlighting the most important aspects.
- Affiliate Logo Alt Text
- Alt text describing the logo of an organization that is affiliated with the content,
- Affiliate Logo URI
- URI for Logo for an organization that is affiliated with the content in some way. Eg. Endorsement, sponsorship, etc.
- Affliate Logo Filename
- Filename of logo for an organization that is affiliated with the content in some way. E.g. Endorsement, sponsorship etc
- Book Cover Link
- A link to the file containing the Cover of the Book
- Contributor Affiliated Organisation
- An institution or organization (for example, university, corporation) with which a contributor was affiliated at the time of content creation
- Contributor Affiliation Address
- Address of the Organisation to which the Contributor is affiliated
- Contributor Affiliation Country
- The country in which the organisation is located to which the contributor is affiliated
- Contributor Affliation Country ISO
- the correspdonding ISO-3166-1-2 digital country code of the country of the contributor's affiliation
- Contributor Given Names
- Given forename and/or initials, middle names and/or initials, and first-name suffix (eg. John Junior) of a contributor
- Contributor Job Title
- Professional position held by a contributor
- Contributor Name Prefix
- Honorifics or other qualifiers that usually precede a contributor's name (for example, Professor, Rev., President, Senator, Dr, Sir, The Honorable)
- Contributor Name Suffix
- Text or qualifiers, such as "Jr" or "III", that follow the Surname of a contributor. Does not include degree/qualification abbreviation (see Contributor Qualification/hons)
- Contributor ORCID
- Alphanumeric code to uniquely identify scientific and other academic authors and contributors, according to the Open Researcher and Contributor ID standard
- Contributor Order
- Order of contributors in XML, prioritised for display order
- Contributor Qualifications/hons
- Abbreviation of the academic degree or qualification held by a contributor.
- Contributor Role
- The role that a contributor plays in creating the content, for example General Editor or Continuing Author
- Contributor Surname
- The given surname of a contributor (name only, not suffix or degree)
- Contributor Type
- A generalised grouping of the (e.g authorial or editorial) roles the contributors plays in creating the content
- Contributor Website
- A link (URL) to an external web page containing information about the contributor
- Copyright Holder
- The name of the party (person or organisation) owning or managing the copyright to a content item, e.g. Oxford University Press, Chicago University Press
- Copyright Statement
- A notice of statutorily prescribed form that informs users of the underlying claim to copyright ownership in a published content object
- Copyright Year
- The 4 digit year in which the content was copyrighted.
- Corporate Author
- [The role of] an organization named as the author of a piece of content
- DOI
- Digital Object Identifier: a unique alphanumeric string used to identify content object. DOIs can be registered with an independent agency (we use CrossRef) and once registered used as a URL that provides a persistent link to the content’s location on the internet
- Date Last Reviewed
- Date showing when content has been reviewed by Author/ Editor/ Editorial but not updated
- Edition Number
- Arabic number of the edition of the book
- Edition Revision Number
- Post decimal place designator which forms part of the Edition Number when all content not sufficiently revised to be a New Edition but sufficiently revised to be a new Work
- Edition Set Identifier
- Unique ID given to an Edition set, used as a single identifier to group all editions of the content together
- Edition Statement
- A human-readable description of Edition information -can include edition number.
- Extent
- The number of pages of the first print format of the published book
- Funder Name
- Name of the grant-giving organisation or institution that has funded the research described in the content object
- Funding Award ID
- Unique identifier of the award provided to fund the research described in the content item, assigned by Crossref. Also known as "grant number" or "grant ID"
- Funding Award Type
- The type of Funding Award funding the research described in the content object
- Funding Institution ID
- Unique identifier of the organization or institution that has funded the research described in the content object, assigned by Crossref
- ISBNs
- International Standard Book Number, the 13 digit international code for identifying separate formats of the same Edition
- Keywords
- A word or phrase used to indicate what the content item is about
- Language
- Language used in Content object
- OUP Work ID
- An OUP specific unique identifier for a content object.
- Online Collection
- A grouping of content objects (that is not a book, journal, issue or other containing object).
- Online Collection Subject
- A legacy grouping of content objects by Subject Discipline specific to an Online Collection
- Online Publication Date
- Date of first publication online
- Open Access License Paragraph
- Open Access information accompanying license type
- Open Access License Type
- A Taxonomy of types of Creative Commons Open Access Licence
- Open Access Y/N
- Confirms if content is under an open access license
- Print Publication Date
- Date of first publication in print
- Product Contributor Affiliation
- Product ONIX Data contributor affiliation information
- Product Contributor Job Title
- Product ONIX data contributor occupation information
- Product Format (Binding Type)
- Format of the Product in which a Work - Content object - is sold (eg. HB, PB, etc)
- Product Set Subtitle
- The ONIX/Product data Subtitle of a Book/Volume which is in a Set
- Product Set Title
- The ONIX/Product data title of the Set which a Book is in
- Product Title
- The ONIX/Product data Title of a Book which is in a Set
- Psychological Disorders
- Psychological disorder(s) or clinical problem(s) which the content object is about, selected from a taxonomy
- Publisher Country
- Country location of the publisher of the content object
- Publisher Name
- The name of the company or person who has published a content object.
- Publisher Place
- Location within country of the publisher of the content object.
- Related content - chapter
- A (DOI) link to a chapter in a book published by OUP related by key topics
- Related content external link type
- Type of external object that is linked to the content
- Related content - book
- A (DOI) link to another book published by OUP related by key topics
- Related content - external link
- A URL link to a content object that is related in some way to the content object containing the link
- Related content - external link text
- Text describing the external object linked to the content
- Related content - replaces
- Link between a content object which replaces another
- Series (Digital)
- A selection of Series that are available for online classification on the Oxford Academic platform.
- Series Title
- The title of an open-ended range of discrete books sharing features of design and branded for separate marketing, for all formats.
- Set ID
- A unique ID for each Set
- Set Title
- Overarching set container title - generically true of all volumes in the set.
- Set Volume Number
- The number of a volume (Book) which is part of a Set.
- Subject (BIC)
- Subject(s) which the content object is about, selected from the BIC standard subject list
- Subject (BISAC)
- Subject(s) which the content object is about, selected from the BISAC standard subject list
- Subject (Oxford Taxonomy)
- Studiable subject discipline area in which the content object would provide useful information.
- Subtitle
- A subordinate or auxiliary title that adds information to, or modifies, a Title
- Subtitle (when a Book is a Volume in a Set)
- A subordinate or auxiliary title that adds information to, or modifies, a Title
- Supplementary Material
- Supporting material (e.g. data) made available separately but linked to the text of the content object
- Title
- A distinctive description enabling users to identify the content object
- Title (when a Book is a Volume in a Set)
- A distinctive description enabling users to identify the content object
- Volume Title
- Primary titular description specific to a single Book/Volume in a Set, not describing the generic title of the Set the Book is in.
