Mathematical equations
Capture mathematical statements as MathML or LaTeX within a disp-formula or inline-formula element, unless images are requested.
Use MathML/LaTeX for all mathematical content, including block equations, inline equations and single math characters, with the following exceptions:
- Article titles (use Unicode character entities)
- Author/contributor’s name (use Unicode character entities)
- Complex flow diagrams/figures that cannot be represented in MathML/LaTeX coding (supply as an image).
- Where images are requested in place of MathML/LaTeX
- Where images only are provided for archive transition articles, and there is no requirement to add MathML/LaTeX
If source manuscript is supplied as LaTeX, then use LaTeX to capture mathematical equations.
If there is a choice between MathML and LaTeX, encode consistently throughout an article in one or the other.
A disp-formula element may only be a child of a p element if it is within a list or a footnote.
