The allowed values of role for contrib contrib-type="author" are:
| Role | Definition |

| Artist | The role of the creator of drawings that accompany but are not the primary content. If the drawings are the primary content, see Artist. |
| Author | The role taken by a person who is the writer of content. Preparation, creation and/or structure of content of the published work, specifically writing the initial draft. |
| Cartographer | The role of one who created or otherwise contributed maps supplementary to the content. |
| Colourist | The role of one who contributed colouring to artwork in the process of drawing/inking/colouring/finishing when this process is done by multiple separate contributors. |
| Comic Script Author | The role of one who writes dialogue, captions, and other text in comic book content following an outline by the primary writer. |
| Composer | The role of the primary author of music. |
| Concept Creator | The role of one who provided the idea or core concept for the work if they are separate from the primary author. |
| Continuing Author | The role of one who has in this work provided a direct continuation of an original work by another author. |
| Contributor | The role of one who has contributed additional text which accompanies but does not make up the main text of the work. Note that the role of the person who has written the main text of a chapter should be 'Author' rather than 'Contributor'. |
| Cover Artist | The role of the artist who created the cover art image for the work. |
| Creator | The role of one who originally created the work and has significant input on the format/direction of an ongoing series, usually in televsion/film. |
| Designer | The role of one who authored the original design for the content. |
| Expert Commentator | The role of a person who has provided expert commentary as part of a piece of content. |
| Illustrator | The role of the artist who created illustratons accompanying the content, or who created/pencilled the original linework of a graphic novel or comic. |
| Inker | The role of one who finalises the linework of the original illustrator. |
| Interviewee | The role of the one being interviewed by an interviewer. |
| Interviewer | The role of the one conducting the interview of an interviewee. |
| Letterer | The role of one who creates text balloons and other text elements for text created by a separate contributor. |
| Libretto Author | The role of the author of text accompanying a musical work such as an opera. |
| Lyricist | The role of the primary author of the lyrics of a song. |
| Lyrics Author | The role of a secondary author of the lyrics of a song. |
| Original Author | The role of the author of the first edition of a work who is not an author of this current edition. |
| Other Primary Creator | The role of the primary creator of the content when their relationship to the work is not covered by any other available roles. |
| Paper Engineer | The role of the designer or paper engineer of die-cuts, press-outs or of pop-ups in a pop-up book. |
| Photographer | The role of the creator of photographs which accompany but do not comprise the primary content of the work. |
| Preliminary Work Author | The role of one who contributed the preliminary work on which the creation of the work by separate contributors is based. |
| Primary Artist | The role of the primary creator of visual artwork which comprises the work. |
| Primary Photographer | The role of the primary creator of photographs which comprise the work. |
| Screenplay Author | The role of the author of the screenplay or script of a film or video. |
| Secondary Author | The role of one who has acted as an author of the main text of the work in lesser part than any of the primary authors. A secondary author. |
| Software Author | The role of the author/coder of software which is ancillary to the primary content. |
| Text Author | The role of the author of text which accompanies the primary work when the work is not primarily textual. |

| Abridging Editor | The role of one who has abridged the content, forming a shortened version of the original. |
| Adapting Editor | The role of the editor responsible for adapting the content from one genre or medium to another. |
| Assistant | The generic role of one who provideded assistance to another contributor in their editing role, but not to such a degree that the assistant can be given that other role. |
| Associate Editor | The role of an editor who is delegated work from the editor-in-chief or more senior editor. |
| Consultant Editor | The role of an editor brought on in an advisory capacity to contribute their knowledge to the editorial process around the publication fo the work. |
| Dramatising Editor | The role of one reponsible for the adaptation of content into a dramatic form. |
| Editor | The role of a person or organization who commissions or prepares written or recorded material for publication. |
| Editor-in-Chief | The role of the principal editor of a publication, responsible for managing editorial policies and the production of content. |
| Editorial Board Member | The role of one who is a member of the editorial board which commissioned or prepared the content for publication. |
| Editorial Co-ordinator | The role of one who coordinates editorial work by multiple editors working on the content. |
| Founding Editor | The role of the editor who founded a serial publication or other continuing edited collection of content. |
| General Editor | The role of the editor who supervises other editors working on content in a collection. |
| General Rapporteur | The role of an expert editor who takes responsibility for the legal content of a collaborative law volume. |
| Guest Editor | The role of an editor who acquires content and leads the review process for a special issue of a journal. |
| Literary Editor | The role of an editor responsible for establishing the text used in an edition of a literary work, when this contribution is distinct from work by other editors. |
| Managing Editor | The editorial role that takes day-to-day responsibility for editing a journal, often with regard to budget, staffing and scheduling, usually reporting to the Editor-in-Chief |
| Music Arranging Editor | The editor responsible for the arrangement of musical pieces. |
| Original Editor | The role of the editor of the first edition of a work who is not an editor of this current edition. |
| Other Editor | The role of an editor who has contributed editorial work which is not covered by any other available editorial role. |
| Preparing Editor | The role of one who contributed editorial work to prepare the content for publication. |
| Recounter | The role of one who originally told the story that comprises the work. |
| Retelling Editor | The role of one responsible for the retelling of the story which comprises the text and was originally told by another. |

| Series Editor | The role of one responsible for the overall editorial relationship with authors for all works within a series, distinct from the editors specific to one or more specific works in the series. |
| Technical Editor | The role of the editor responsible for the technical accuracy of language within the work and/or the coordination and preparation of technical material for publication. |
